Braided Rugs
Braided rugs have been around for a long time. Early settlers made their own oval braided rugs by keeping all of their old worn out clothing, toweling and other fabrics. They would cut the fabric into long strips and fold the strips so that the raw edges were folded inside. The strips are then braided together into a long continuous section forming a braided area rug. Starting at the center and coiling the material around itself and at the same time lacing the coil together eventually this becomes a one of a kind hand made rug, after many hours of work.
Round Braided rugs can enhance the beauty of any room or space in your home. Braided rugs make a warm and comfortable impression and are very practical. They hold up well to all kinds of traffic and can take a lot of abuse. They are a good choice in a home with children and pets.
Braided rugs are not as formal as the patterned Persian, oriental, and European traditional styles. Braided area rugs are found in many country homes, country cottages and farm style houses. Originally braided rugs were only available in oval and round shapes. They are now available in a rectangular shape, also squares, and even octagons. Braided rugs are used in the living room, family room, entry, hallway, den, children’s room, dining room, kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms.
Braids are made in wide variety of materials. Color and design are the most important factors in selecting a rug. Other important factors are the selection of yarn type and content. One reason for selecting a specific yarn is its resistance to moisture and stains, strength against abrasion, color fastness, and price. Olefin or sometimes called polypropelene is color fast and resistant to stains. Yarns are blended to achieve special textures and effects. Wool and olefin are a common blend.
Braided rugs are easy to care for and they are reversible. When they are dirty on one side just turn the rug over. You can steam clean them yourself or send them out to be professionally cleaned. I have even taken them out on my deck and hosed them off and after being allowed to dry flat outside they look very good.
